Our Youth Council has been working with Newport City Council and schools across the city on their Period Dignity campaign.

Newport City Council’s Period Dignity campaign seeks to ensure that no-one misses out on education due to their period.

As some sanitary products can cause a massive strain on the environment with materials that can take an astonishing 800 years to decompose, the Welsh Government has provided funding to local authorities across Wales to help support young people who menstruate in maintaining period dignity in an eco-friendly way!

Newport City Council has provided secondary schools across Newport with free sanitary product vending machines and to ensure that the project provides environmentally friendly options, non-applicator tampons and reusable menstrual cups have also been made available.

Menstrual cups are a safe, eco-friendly, and reliable type of sanitary protection made from medical grade silicone that collects period blood rather than absorbing it. They can last up to 10 years and have a minimal environmental impact, with a study suggesting that reusable products have only 2% of the impact on the environment that single use products have!

So, Newport City Council is eager to provide young people with the ability to reduce their impact on the environment whilst maintaining period dignity.

With this being said, Newport City Council also recognise that Menstrual Cups may not be for everyone and want your input on how to best support you in potentially transitioning to using reusable sanitary products.
